Darkfall May Or May Not Have Launched, May Or May Not Be Available For Purchase, You May Or May Not Care

Darkfall pre-orders have sold out! Good thing too, since as this is launch day they can’t technically sell any more. Now they would be called “orders”.

The latest update has Darkfall slouching towards Bethlehem to be born sometime “this evening European time”. For you Amurrican types, that would be… right about now (at this writing it is 7:00 PM GMT). So… Darkfall may have already launched! You probably missed it because you suck and aren’t hardcore and/or European enough.  Can’t you feel the steady beat of the bodies hitting the floor? Oh wait, that’s the other game that launched today: “50 Cent: Blood on the Sandwich“, where Fitty goes on a mad rampage to kill everyone who dares to bleed on his food, thus causing more blood to spill in an existential commentary on the futility of violence.

Which has nothing to do with Darkfall. Or Shadowbane, for that matter.

Half my guild is in a frenzy trying to get in the game.
I think Ill wait till next week.

If my friends are actually playing the game and it woks, and if by then its easy to sign up and down load, Ill give it a try.

  2. Savage says:

yep, my “frenzy” launch days are over with.. haha. Now we wait and see..

  3. Every MMO goes through this stuff these days:
    -honeymoon
-optimism pure as the driven snow regarding problems
-disturbing head-scratching as hyped game mechanics are not what they were marketed by Sales (big surprise)
-bugs and errors which, while realistic to assume the presence for, are now sources of anger and frustration.
-fork of acceptance: either raging fanboyism tinged with concern that product is not WoW or has WoW numbers or nerd raging doomcasts tinged with self-loathing over being bamboozled yet again by Marketing.

Shadow Bane was a long time ago and I remember just how troubled it was from the start.

  5. It MIGHT survive as a niche product, but I imagine the numbers will be sub-100k within 3 months.

  6. Jason says:

Even when I pre-order, even when I’m in the beta and get early access, I never play on launch day. I tend to get into game around day three, or five… or threeve.

No MMO ever seems to be perfect on day one, particularly hardcore pvp games. I expect Darkfall fans to come back to this blog in a couple weeks, claiming that darkfall lost popularity because of the bugs and not because they weren’t hardcore enough.

  8. dartwick says:

    “seems perfect”

I guess you didnt attempt to play SB day one. I guess you didnt play it month one. By any reasonable standard the game didnt work.
If SB had had todays stability at release it might have been a modest success at least.

I suspect DFO will actually work fine – at least after a day or 2.
What I am afraid of I that it will be hax heaven.
Putting up with hacks isnt “hardcore” its silly.

    But Im hopeful.

Wow, just read the plot for Bloody Sandwich… “50 Cent and his G-Unit crew finish completing a tour of shows in the Middle East. Rather than receiving $10 million cash for his work, G-Unit is offered a diamond-embedded skull of legends. The skull gets stolen and 50 Cent, angered by the fact , will do whatever it takes to get it back, even if it means fighting through gangs of thugs and putting himself in life threatening situations.” That’s just… wow…

  10. Paks says:

Gaute’s feeling much better now! 😛

Not a fan of Hemingway I take it?

    @ClydeJr
HAHAHAHA oh god thanks for that man.

Lifted from the script of This Is Hardcore:

Marty: The last time Darkfall toured America, they where, uh, booked into
10,000 seat arenas, and 15,000 seat venues, and it seems that now,
on their current tour they’re being booked into 1,200 seat
arenas, 1,500 seat arenas, and uh I was just wondering,
does this mean uh…the popularity of Hardcore PvP is waning?
Ian: Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no…no, no, not at all. I, I, I just think
that the.. uh.. our Hardc0re PvP appeal is becoming more selective.
Marty: Yeah. Now, I notice this here, you’ve got this cricket bat here…
    Ian: Yes.
    Marty: Do you play?
Ian: No, I carry this partly of, uh, I don’t know some sort of, uh, I
    suppose what’s the word…uh….
    Marty: Affectation?

  14. Raad says:

Btw lum, your title is all messed up.

  15. No, the title is just too hardcore for this blog.

  16. Robin Kestrel says:

Darkfall PvP First Impressions video made by exactly the sort of person you’d think would play:

    (It’s a parody. I think.)

I personally doubt that they’ll break 100K ever.

All of this “frenzy” seems more a result of artificial scarcity (whether through incompetence or by design) than anything else. How many copies did they sell 10K? 15K? How many people were really left shut out in the cold?

Three people fighting over the last ham sandwich on earth can be a frenzy too. I think the dust’ll settle quick on this and Darkfall will be lucky to see north of 30K total subscribers by day 120.

It’s just a different market nowadays. I don’t think most MMOs get that, and Darkfall certainly seems more clueless than most.

So the train has wrecked… inside the station?

  19. Triforcer says:

The servers are down because all the preorder money is being spent on fake mustaches and Paraguay Airlines tickets.

  20. Mike Darga says:

Harumph I say! I say harumph.

Niche games failing is absolutely always a bad thing for the industry.
Niche games succeeding is absolutely always a good thing for the industry.

We can’t relish the thought of every new game failing AND still be all indignant when people start getting laid off left and right.

Which do we hate more, an industry that includes subgenres we find distasteful, or an industry where only one monolith can succeed at a time? Everybody’s trying to play both sides, and that just doesn’t work.
